Dmitry Morozov, Alessandro Casaburi and Robert Hadfield at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, have published a major topical review in Contemporary Physics (Taylor & Francis). This review gives an accessible introduction to the physics of photon detection in superconducting materials. The leading superconducting device technologies for visible and infrared single-photon detection are surveyed: superconducting tunnel junctions, kinetic inductance detectors, transition edge sensors, superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors and hot electron bolometers. Current and emerging applications in quantum optics, life sciences, remote sensing and astronomy are signposted. This review is a valuable resource for new researchers and seasoned experts alike.
